An exceptional mid-to-late 1970s studio pottery bottle vase handcrafted by the late Czech-born master ceramicist Oldrich Asenbryl (1943–2024) at his renowned Sarn Pottery workshop in Gwynedd, North Wales.

This elegant, tall cylindrical flagon perfectly bridges the gap between mid-century modern abstract expressionism and the traditional British Anglo-Oriental reduction stoneware movement.

Following his flight to the UK in 1968, Asenbryl spent two highly formative years training alongside Alan Caiger-Smith at the legendary Aldermaston Pottery. That early immersion in masterful, free-flowing calligraphic brushwork shines brilliantly across this specific collectible piece.

The Sarn Gate Chop Mark: Strongly stamped directly onto the preceding curve wall just above the foot rim. This crisp, unbroken square frame encloses an elevated horizontal lintel over an archway—representing a stylized castle gate, portcullis, or "OA" window configuration.

This architectural mark serves as the definitive identification seal for Asenbryl’s early independent studio production run.

The Glaze Technique: The body features a premium high-fired dolomite matt glaze. This specialized formulation provides a signature "silky," buttery, non-reflective white canvas. The high surface tension of the cooling magnesium glaze causes it to break beautifully into a warm, toasted iron-brown tone across the upper flared rim.

Abstract Brush Decoration: Decorated with sweeping, watercolor-like calligraphic gestures in rich cobalt blue and localized iron oxide washes. The iron underlying the glaze has migrated to the surface during a heavy kiln reduction atmosphere, creating gorgeous golden-brown circular halos and scattered iron speckling.

Hand-Thrown Base: The exposed, unglazed stoneware base highlights coarse, gritty clay composition, distinct concentric throwing rings from the potter's wheel, and a distinct orange "toasting" halo from direct flame contact inside the reduction kiln.
