Vintage Ian Pirie Studio Pottery Diptych Wall Chargers – Set of 2

A rare, beautifully matched diptych pair of studio pottery chargers by the highly regarded Scottish ceramicist and academic, Ian Pirie (1951–2022).

Known for his atmospheric, stylized interpretations of the Scottish landscape, Pirie’s work effortlessly bridges the gap between functional craft and fine abstract art.

Subject Matter & Design
This complementing two-part set (diptych) tells a visual story across a split landscape, utilizing a striking combination of traditional slip trailing, wax-resist masking, and reactive glaze washes. One Charger: Features an imposing, deep cobalt blue and black mountain silhouette rising sharply under a bold, white wax-resist moon. Delicate, hand-painted minimalist trees anchor the ridge, set against a multi-toned, mottled sky.

The other charger: Continues the horizon with a rolling coastal or valley plain rendered in rich, metallic iron-oxide browns. A pair of wind-swept, stylized trees stand isolated in the foreground, mirroring the bleak, ethereal beauty of the Scottish Highlands.

Both compositions are housed within heavy, off-white stoneware rims that acts as built-in ceramic frames, drawing focus entirely to the hand-painted center panels.

Professor Ian Pirie studied ceramics and sculpture at the prestigious Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen. He co-founded the Rosebank Pottery in 1975 before building a highly distinguished career as a senior academic leader across Scotland's top art institutions, including Edinburgh College of Art.

His early landscape chargers are highly sought after for their mood, scale, and technical execution.
