An elegant vintage Japanese Sosaku (Creative) Kokeshi doll titled "Semishigure" (Chorus of the Cicadas), hand-carved and painted by the award-winning master artisan Sato Suigai (1920–2001).
This striking mid-century piece features a slender, graceful hourglass silhouette turned from light-grained wood.
The body is stained a rich, vivid indigo blue and delicately detailed with an engraved late-summer grass motif. A natural, uncolored wood obi (sash) cleanly separates the upper and lower torso, a design signature highly characteristic of Suigai's sophisticated, minimalist style.
The beautifully sculpted head features serene, fine-lined facial details and a unique topknot bun on the reverse.
The base bears the authentic, crisp red hanko (signature stamp) reading "Suigai" (翠涯).
A wonderful addition for collectors of mid-century Japanese Mingei folk art or minimalist Asian decor.
