UNUSUAL 20TH CENTURY STUDIO ART GLASS CYLINDER VASE

A highly unusual handmade studio glass vessel, with a simple cylindrical form and striking combination of clear, dark blue-black glass.

The parallel-sided body is formed in bright, transparent clear glass, containing numerous seed bubbles and natural inclusions throughout. The narrowed neck incorporates a dark blue-black glass transition which gradually changes into the clear body below.

The mouth is fire-polished, with an individually worked, slightly irregular appearance. There is no internal conical seat for a stopper.

The substantial applied pedestal foot is particularly distinctive. It is effectively opaque, even when held against strong light, and contains complex black swirling structures together with persistent red/iron-coloured elements within the base glass itself. The underside displays an attractive concentric, wave-like working pattern and retains a pontil scar, providing clear evidence of handmade production.

The vessel has a surprisingly substantial 423 gram weight for its slender form.

DATING & ATTRIBUTION

A 20th-century handmade studio glass piece, with the exact maker and date unknown.

The bright condition, minimal wear beneath the foot and graduated transition from coloured glass into clear glass are consistent with later studio-glass production rather than an early 19th-century vessel.

CONDITION

Very good original condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs observed. Bubbles, inclusions, colour variations and irregularities are inherent characteristics of the handmade glass.

A particularly distinctive piece, combining an unusually restrained cylindrical form with fascinating internal colour, texture and evidence of mouth-blown glassmaking process.
