This piece is an exceptional mystery masterwork from the 1950s or 1960s, beautifully channeling the elite modernist lines of Bitossi alongside the legendary reactive glaze chemistry characteristic of mid-century Staffordshire and European studio pottery.
The design: A continuous, sweeping geometric curve where the chest and crown pull upward into a colossal, vertical crescent-shaped bill. A perfectly stable, weighted tripod form consisting of two bulbous front leg pads and a rear balancing tail pad.
Highly stylized minimalist features, anchored by a prominent, physically molded "pimple" eye node.
Coated in a deep, glossy, iron-rich molasses "treacle" underglaze. Layered over this is a thick, highly reactive cobalt blue and plum purple fambé glaze that has pooled beautifully in the wider contours. The dark treacle base naturally bleeds through at the tight tension ridges of the neck and feet. The bill features an optical illusion. The glaze application is densely speckled and stippled, giving it a stone-like, textured visual appearance while remaining completely smooth, glassy, and tactile to the touch.
The eye features a sharp, graphic target ring hand-painted precisely over the raised node, creating a striking focal point.
Fine, slip-cast chalky white earthenware/ceramic body, characteristic of high-quality mid-century slipware. The interior is visible via a clean, circular base pour-hole.
Features smooth, cleanly masked, unglazed foot pads that have naturally and beautifully aged over the decades.
Excellent vintage condition. The high-gloss glaze holds a beautiful liquid mirror reflection with no cracks or compromises to the structural lines.
