Antique German Chinoiserie Porcelain Geisha Spill Vase – Model 376
A rare and charming antique German porcelain figural spill vase, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.
Beautifully encapsulating the "Japonisme" design craze that swept through Europe, this piece depicts an elegant lady dressed in traditional Japanese garb, complete with a flowing kimono adorned with rich blue and white underglaze scrollwork and holding a shallow basket.
True to the European chinoiserie adaptations of the era, the figurine uniquely combines Far Eastern costume with distinctly European facial features and hair styling, mimicking the high-society theatrical trend of western ladies dressing in fine oriental garments.
The reverse features a decorative, open hollow tree stump intended to hold fireplace spills (twisted paper tapers used to transfer flames) or small floral sprigs.
The underside is impressed with the model/mold number 376.
• Country of Origin: Germany
• Material: Heavy-glazed fine porcelain
• Height: 16 cm (approx. 6.3 inches)
• Weight: 290g
• Condition: Very Good antique condition. Free of any post-production chips, cracks, or restorations. The glossy glaze remains exceptionally bright.
• Collector's Note: There is an original, stable hairline firing crack running from the central kiln ventilation/firing hole in the unglazed base. This is an artifact of the 19th-century manufacturing process where the thick glaze contracted in the kiln, not damage from wear or impacts.
