A charming and unusual pair of antique Copeland porcelain vases, each modelled as a cat climbing up the side of a fluted cream or milk churn and peering over the rim.
The white porcelain bodies are beautifully decorated with raised gilding, applied pink bows and sprays of colourful raised flowers and foliage, with gilt detailing around the rims and on the front of the vessels. The finely modelled cats are particularly appealing, with excellent three-dimensional detail.
This distinctive cat-and-churn form is a documented 19th-century Copeland design, examples of which are found in the antique market. One of these vases retains a small painted underglaze mark to the underside; the other is unmarked.
They make an especially attractive pair, with the slightly whimsical subject and elaborate applied decoration typical of Victorian decorative porcelain.
Measurements: 14 cm tall
Base diameter: 8 cm
Rim diameter: 6 cm
Weight: 286 g each / 572 g pair
Very good overall antique condition. The porcelain bodies, rims and cats are free from chips or major damage. There are some small losses to the applied flowers, leaves and other decorative elements, consistent with age and handling. Gilding shows some light age-related wear.
Please study the photographs carefully for the condition and remaining decoration.
A very attractive and unusual pair of antique English porcelain pieces with strong Copeland character.
