The Ariel Technique: A New Direction

The Ariel technique was developed at Orrefors in 1937, more than two decades after the Graal technique, and it represented a fundamentally different approach to the problem of internal decoration in glass. Where Graal used engraving or etching to create decoration on the surface of a coloured blank before encasing it, Ariel used sandblasting to create a pattern of recesses in the blank, which then trapped air during the encasing process. The trapped air formed bubbles within the body of the finished piece, arranged in the pattern determined by the sandblasting.

The technique was developed by Vicke Lindstrand and master glassblower Gustaf Bergqvist, working in collaboration with designer Edvin Öhrström. The name Ariel was chosen with reference to the spirit of the air in Shakespeare's The Tempest, a choice that reflected the technique's defining characteristic: the presence of air within the glass body as a decorative element.

The Ariel Process: How It Works

The Ariel process begins, like the Graal process, with the creation of a coloured glass blank. Edvin Öhrström and the Ariel Tradition

Öhrström joined Orrefors in 1936 and worked at the factory until 1957, and his Ariel pieces from this period are the works that established the technique's international reputation.

Öhrström was trained as a sculptor, and his approach to the Ariel technique was shaped by a sculptor's understanding of three-dimensional form and internal structure. Sven Palmqvist and the Continuation of Both Techniques

Sven Palmqvist, who joined Orrefors in 1928, worked with both the Graal and Ariel techniques during his long career at the factory, alongside his development of the Ravenna and Fuga techniques. His Graal pieces demonstrate the same analytical approach to material that characterised his technical innovations, with compositions that exploited the optical properties of the encasing process in ways that were precisely calculated. His Ariel work, produced alongside Öhrström during the late 1930s and 1940s, contributed to the development of the technique's possibilities during its formative period.

Palmqvist's engagement with both techniques across his career at Orrefors is a reminder that the Graal and Ariel traditions were not the exclusive property of individual designers but were shared resources within the factory, available to all its artists and developed through the collective practice of a community of designers and makers over several decades.

Later Graal and Ariel: The Post-War Period

Both techniques continued to be used at Orrefors after the Second World War, and the post-war period brought new designers to both processes. Eva Englund, who joined Orrefors in 1974, became one of the most significant Graal designers of the later twentieth century. For Graal, the most sought-after pieces are those by Edward Hald, particularly his fish compositions from the 1920s through to the 1950s. Large pieces with complex figurative compositions command the highest prices, and pieces with documented exhibition history or museum provenance attract premiums. Simon Gate's Graal pieces are rarer and are collected primarily by specialists in the early Orrefors tradition. For Ariel, the most significant pieces are those by Edvin Öhrström, whose figurative Ariel compositions from the late 1930s and 1940s represent the technique at its most ambitious.
