Introduction
Among the most common points of confusion for new collectors of decorated glass is the distinction between wheel engraving and acid etching. Both techniques produce decorative designs on the glass surface by creating a contrast between matt, frosted areas and the polished surrounding glass. Both can produce designs of considerable complexity and visual appeal. And both are found on antique and vintage glass across a wide range of periods and price points.
But they are fundamentally different techniques — different in their history, their visual character, their period associations, and their implications for value. A wheel-engraved glass and an acid-etched glass of superficially similar appearance may differ very significantly in age, rarity, and price, and the collector who cannot distinguish between them is at a significant disadvantage.

Wheel Engraving: The Older Tradition
Wheel engraving — as described in detail in our companion guide Wheel Engraving on Antique Glass — is a subtractive technique in which a rotating wheel fed with abrasive slurry cuts into the glass surface to produce a matt, frosted design. It is a hand process requiring considerable skill, and the quality of the result reflects directly the skill and experience of the engraver.
Wheel engraving has been used to decorate glass since antiquity and was the dominant decorative technique for fine English drinking glass throughout the 18th century. All genuine Georgian engraved glass — Jacobite glasses, armorial glasses, commemorative glasses, Masonic glasses — is wheel engraved. Acid etching did not exist as a practical decorative technique until the 19th century.
This chronological point is fundamental: if a glass is genuinely of the 18th century, any engraved decoration on it must be wheel engraving. Acid etching on a glass purporting to be Georgian is an immediate indicator that either the glass or the decoration is not of the period claimed.
Acid Etching: The Industrial Technique
Acid etching uses hydrofluoric acid — or, more commonly in commercial production, ammonium bifluoride paste — to attack the glass surface chemically, producing a matt, frosted effect. The design is created by applying an acid-resistant resist (wax, varnish, or a printed transfer) to the areas of the glass that are to remain polished, then exposing the unprotected areas to the acid. When the resist is removed, the acid-attacked areas are matt and frosted, producing the design.
Acid etching was developed as a practical decorative technique in the mid-19th century and became widely used in commercial glass production from the 1860s onwards. It is faster and cheaper than wheel engraving — a single worker can etch many pieces simultaneously, whereas wheel engraving requires individual attention to each piece — and it is capable of producing very fine, detailed designs, particularly when photographic transfer resists are used.
Acid etching is the dominant decorative technique on Victorian and Edwardian glass — the frosted pub mirrors, the decorated decanters, the commemorative glass of the late 19th and early 20th centuries are almost all acid etched. It is also widely used on 20th-century and contemporary glass.
How to Tell the Difference: Visual Characteristics
The key to distinguishing wheel engraving from acid etching lies in examining the character of the frosted surface and the edges of the design under good light, ideally with a loupe.
Surface Texture
Wheel engraving produces a surface texture that reflects the mechanical action of the rotating wheel. Under magnification, the engraved surface shows a series of fine parallel or curved scratches — the marks of the abrasive wheel — that give the frosted area a slightly directional quality. The texture is not perfectly uniform; it varies slightly with the direction of the cut and the pressure applied.
Acid etching produces a more uniform, granular surface texture. Under magnification, the etched surface has a fine, even grain — the result of the acid attacking the glass surface uniformly in all directions. There is no directionality to the texture; it is the same in all orientations.
Edge Definition
This is often the most immediately useful distinguishing criterion.
Wheel engraving produces edges that are slightly soft and irregular — the result of the rotating wheel cutting into the glass with a curved profile. The boundary between the frosted engraved area and the polished surrounding glass is not perfectly sharp; it has a slight gradation that reflects the profile of the wheel. Under magnification, the edges of wheel-engraved cuts show a characteristic slight undercutting or rounding.
Acid etching produces edges that are very sharp and precise — the result of the acid attacking the glass right up to the edge of the resist. The boundary between the frosted etched area and the polished surrounding glass is a clean, hard line. Under magnification, the edges of acid-etched designs are crisp and well-defined, with no gradation or undercutting.
This difference in edge character is the most reliable single indicator: soft, slightly irregular edges suggest wheel engraving; sharp, precise edges suggest acid etching.
Design Character
Wheel engraving has a design character that reflects the hand of the engraver. The lines are fluid and slightly variable — the width and depth of a cut changes slightly as the engraver moves the glass against the wheel. Fine wheel engraving has a quality of line that is recognisably hand-made, with the subtle variations that distinguish hand work from mechanical production.
Acid etching, particularly when produced from a printed or photographic transfer resist, has a design character that is more mechanical and uniform. The lines are perfectly consistent in width; the design has a regularity that reflects its mechanical origin. Very fine acid etching — particularly photographic etching — can produce designs of extraordinary detail and precision that would be impossible to achieve by hand with a wheel.
Depth
Wheel engraving cuts into the glass to a measurable depth — typically 0.5–2mm for standard engraving, deeper for more elaborate work. This depth can be felt by running a fingernail across the engraved surface; the nail catches slightly in the deeper cuts.
Acid etching attacks only the surface of the glass — the depth of attack is very shallow, typically less than 0.1mm. Running a fingernail across an acid-etched surface, the frosted area feels smooth and flat; there is no perceptible depth to the design.
This tactile test — running a fingernail across the decorated surface — is one of the quickest and most reliable ways to distinguish the two techniques. If you can feel the depth of the cuts, it is wheel engraving. If the surface feels flat and smooth despite being frosted, it is acid etching.
Uniformity of Frosting
In wheel engraving, the frosted quality of the engraved areas varies slightly with the depth and direction of the cuts. Areas cut with a larger wheel have a different texture from areas cut with a fine wheel; deeply cut areas have a different quality from lightly cut areas. This variation gives wheel-engraved glass a visual richness and depth that acid etching cannot replicate.
In acid etching, the frosted quality of the etched areas is uniform throughout — the acid attacks the glass surface consistently regardless of the design. All etched areas have the same texture and the same degree of frosting.
Period Associations and Value Implications
The distinction between wheel engraving and acid etching has direct implications for the dating and valuation of decorated glass:
- Pre-1850 decorated glass — if the decoration is engraved, it must be wheel engraving. Acid etching did not exist as a practical technique before the mid-19th century. A piece with acid-etched decoration cannot be genuinely pre-1850.
- Victorian and Edwardian glass — both techniques were used in this period. Wheel-engraved Victorian glass is generally more valuable than acid-etched glass of the same period, reflecting the greater skill and time required for wheel engraving.
- 20th-century and contemporary glass — acid etching is the dominant technique for commercial decorated glass. Wheel engraving on 20th-century glass is the work of specialist craftsmen and is correspondingly more valuable.
- Jacobite and other Georgian subjects — any glass with Jacobite, armorial, or other Georgian engraved subjects must be wheel engraved if it is genuine. Acid-etched Jacobite decoration is an immediate indicator of a later reproduction.
